26 Nov Lights IX

“For You are my candle, God; God illuminates my darkness.” (Samuel II 22:29) Compare this to: “They shall take for you pure, pressed olive oil.” (Exodus 27:20)  Usually a man will use his poor oil for his candle and his better oil for his food. In the Temple they did not do this, but they used the finer oil for candles, and the lesser oil for the Mincha offering. This is why David said to God, “You are my candle,” meaning I dedicate all my best efforts to You. (Midrash Tanchuma, Titzaveh 3)

The Chanukah candles should represent and symbolize the best of our efforts.

ToolsApplication:
Everything we do in our service of God over the next few weeks should reflect the best of our efforts.
